Advanced Aquatic Therapy
Course Instructor: Audrey Collins

Course Description
Overview:
This course builds on your aquatic therapy skills as you manipulate hydrodynamics and re-align the focus from vertical water training to suspended interventions. Practice of passive, active and resistive work managing the physics of water and stability will challenge coordination, strength, endurance and function. The properties of water offer a heightened sensorimotor response that specific handling can uniquely emphasize. Learning is case-based, exploring aquatic therapy for our complex, prehab, chronic, ortho and neuro clients. Clinicians will have the opportunity to problem-solve for their challenging clients. This is for clinicians with aquatic therapy experience and, who have completed the CAR Foundational course.
Topics include:
-
Deck assessment, aquatic adaptation
-
Active and passive aquatic therapy interventions to address specific goals
-
Aquatic exercise prescription and progression, dosage, intensity
-
Research on Aquatic Therapy interventions in complex cases
-
Communicating aquatic therapy treatment to client, family and the medical
team
Course Format:
-
Lectures
-
Hands-on, in-pool practice sessions with quizzes, group work
-
Demonstration treatments with patients (facility dependent)
-
Case-based learning/testing
-
Problem-solving your own challenging cases
-
Aquatic therapy equipment provided to try
Program Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Identify the appropriate complex clients for aquatic therapy interventions.
-
Communicate to clients the benefits of aquatic therapy and its adaptation.
-
Utilize assessment tools, PROMs, to enhance patient interaction.
-
Apply hydrodynamics to address client-based therapeutic goals.
-
Creatively design a client-centred aquatic therapy session based on the manipulation of the properties of water.
-
Explore the research to then apply appropriate interventions, dosage and intensity to clinical practice.
