Persistent Pain Management in Aquatic Therapy
Course Instructor: Audrey Collins

Course Description
Overview:
This course will focus on the effectiveness of aquatic therapy in the management of persistent pain. Pain Education will clarify why immersion in water, chest deep, uniquely address persistent pain. Passive and active aquatic therapy interventions, both hands-on and hands-off, will be practiced. Ai Chi, turbulence, wave manipulation, and sensory integration in both the shallow and deep-end will be explored. Case discussions and problem solving is a collaborative component of this course. Research protocols, interventions and dosage will be explored to apply to clinical practice. This is for clinicians with a good understanding of the persistent pain and want to enhance their patient care, offering a management tool and bridging their clients to community aquatic programming.
Topics include:
-
Review of the physiology of immersion and its effects on persistent pain
-
Client-centred approach to assessment, aquatic adaptations and intervention
design -
Addressing intensity, dosage, and outcomes in the care of the complex client
-
Practice of active and passive aquatic therapy, hands-on and hands-off,
interventions -
Design and communication of treatment prescription and progressions.
-
Research on Aquatic Therapy interventions for people with Persistent Pain
Course Format:
-
Lectures
-
Hands-on, in-pool practice sessions with quizzes, group presentation
-
Demonstration treatments with patients (facility dependent)
-
In-pool case-based learning/testing
-

Program Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the advantages, limitations, contraindications, and precautions of
aquatic therapy for the client with persistent pain. -
Optimize hydrodynamics to enable a client with persistent pain to participate
in aquatic therapy and exercise. -
Understand the intervention adaptations and options for active and/or passive
aquatic therapy to address the goals of a client with persistent pain. -
Explore the research fo persistent pain and aquatic therapy and apply to
clinical practice. -
