
Pediatric Aquatic Therapy

Course Description
Overview:
This 8-hour course reviews hydrodynamics, physiology of immersion, and specific contraindications when working with children in the aquatic environment. A review of evidence and case discussions pertaining to paediatric populations including ASD, CP, DMD, SMA, post-op inpatients and outpatients will be discussed. Pool sessions will practice application of aquatic interventions for both group and 1:1 therapy settings. On completion of the course, therapists will be able to design and evaluate evidence based aquatic physiotherapy treatment plans for pediatric clients.
Topics include:

Contraindications and precautions for children with complex medical needs

Evidence based aquatic protocols for a variety of diagnoses including CP, JIA, ASD

Real-life inpatient and outpatient rehab case studies

Group games and interventions
Course Format:

Classroom lectures: videos of aquatic therapy skills, research review, case-study discussions

Pool labs: partnered work, pair and share, practice using aquatic therapy equipment
Program Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the risks and benefits associated with aquatic therapy for complex clients

Design an aquatic therapy treatment plan for a complex pediatric client

Evaluate aquatic therapy treatment plans using validated outcome measures

Instruct group therapy for pediatric clients and their parents

Select appropriate floatation aids for complex clients

Choose effective pool equipment and pool toys to meet client treatment goals
