Course Description 

Overview:


This course provides an in-depth exploration of applied hydrodynamics to take full advantage of the immersive benefits of water for all populations and conditions. The focus will be on effective treatment programs to address therapeutic goals such as functional strength, ROM, balance and gait. It is an introductory course for clinicians who practice aquatic therapy or are interested in practicing aquatic therapy in the private or public healthcare sector.


Topics include:

  • The physiology of immersion

  • Contraindications and precautions

  • Exercise prescription and progression

  • Research on Aquatic Therapy interventions for common conditions

  • Effective aquatic therapy treatment plans to address goals

Course Format:

 

  • Lectures

  • Hands-on, in-pool practice sessions with quizzes, group presentation

  • Demonstration treatments with patients (facility dependent)

  • In-pool case-based learning/testing

  • Clinical case videos

  • Aquatic therapy equipment provided to try


Program Objectives


By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

 

  1. Define the role of aquatic therapy in rehabilitation.

  2.  Discuss the advantages, limitations, contraindications, and precautions of aquatic therapy.

  3. Explain the physiology of immersion.

  4. Identify those patients who are appropriate for aquatic therapy intervention.

  5. Apply the principles of buoyancy, turbulence and drag to design effective treatment plans.

  6. Utilize speed, physics and equipment to appropriately progress/augment treatment.

  7. Describe existing methodologies formally used in aquatic therapy

  8. Create and implement aquatic therapy treatment plans to address rehab goals such as gait retraining, balance retraining, strengthen, endurance, ROM increased function, etc.

  9. Communicate to your clients how aquatic therapy/exercise can help them.
